The Diocesan Museum

The Diocesan Museum is housed in the former oratorio of San Bernardino, which dates back to the 15th century and is located in Via Prione, in the same area as the city’s other museums. It forms part of a group of medieval diocese museums located in the Spezia province, along with those in Sarzana and Brugnato. Its collection is made up of a series of handmade artistic, liturgical and ecclesiastical artefacts. A series of display panels describe and explain both the geographical changes that the region has undergone over the years, as well as the evolution of the various religious buildings, orders and works of art.
The ground floor hosts the museum’s permanent art gallery and historical exhibition. The art gallery includes paintings by artists such as Carpenino and Carlo Braccesco, dating back to the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The first floor, which was formerly the choir of the oratorio, houses a series of precious objects, whereas the second floor documents the history of the spezian diocese.
