The sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Olmo

This sanctuary is situated on the slopes of Mount Santa Croce, just above the town of Fabiano. It was originally dedicated to Madonnde del Monte or Mandonna della Costa. It was changed to dell’Olmo (meaning “of the Elm”) thanks to the presence of an elm tree located in the church courtyard.
Just before the second half of the 17th century, a slate image of the Madonna con Bambino appeared on a wall that used to run alongside the mountain road. But with the increase in popularity of the church, it was decided that a little church should be built in its place. Work on the construction of the church was started in 1659, and lasted in 8 years. The church was finally opened to the congregation in 1667. However, the increase in the number of pilgrims meant that the little church was no longer big enough for everyone. In 1838, work began on the construction of a larger building, which was finished and opened in 1844.
Built of limestone and rocks, the building features a large main entrance, flanked by two windows and surmounted with a rose window. The interior consists of a single aisle with a lovely baroque central altar, which features a statue of the Madonna. A second statue representing Santa Rita stands to the right of the main entrance.
