THE MUSEUM OF PALEONTOLOGY

Housed in the rooms and courtyard of the Lerici Castle, the Museum of Palaeontology was opened due to the discovery of dinosaur bones in the Lerici region, which are thought to be over 220 million years old.
The discovery of these remains provoked a deeper investigation into the prehistoric history of Spezia, which revealed the presence of prehistoric rocks, fossils and minerals. Studies have helped to reveal the various landscape changes that the region has undergone over the years, from the savannah that used to surround the base of the Apuane Alps, to the last ice age.
The courtyard boasts life size reconstructions of some of Italy’s largest dinosaurs; the pareiasauraus, the dilophosarus, the ceratosaurus and the vulcanodon.
The seismic simulation room is particularly fascinating, featuring robotic dinosaurs that move around in an artificial landscape, designed to recapture the world as it was 50 million years ago. The exhibition also includes an interactive study on the nature of earthquakes.
